Your Life Is Hidden with Christ in God
Reflection
"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." Colossians 3 opens with the instruction to set your mind on things above — to orient your thinking toward the reality where Christ is seated at the right hand of God, rather than being governed by what you can observe and touch. The basis for this reorientation is a remarkable theological statement: your old self died (2:20, 3:3), and your true life is now hidden. "Hidden" — not lost, not destroyed, not absent. Hidden. A hidden thing is real; it is simply not visible to ordinary observation. The hiddenness is protective: what is hidden is safe from what is visible. "With Christ in God" — the location of the hidden life. Not somewhere vague or spiritual; specific: with Christ, in God. The three-dimensional security: you are in Christ, Christ is in God, and your life is tucked into that divine embrace. The present reality: your life is hidden. The people around you cannot see it fully. You may not be able to see it fully. The full reality of who you are in Christ is not yet visible in what is observable. The future guarantee: "When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." The revealing will be complete. What is hidden now will be visible then. The life that is currently invisible will be gloriously manifest. This is the eschatological anchor of Christian identity: not "I will be something great someday" but "I am already something hidden that will be revealed."
Background
Colossians 3:1–4 provides the theological basis for the ethical instructions that follow (3:5–4:6): because your true life is hidden in Christ, put to death earthly things, put on the new self. The order matters: identity precedes ethics. You are not trying to earn a hidden life; you already have one. The behavior that follows is the fruit of the identity, not the cause of it.
Truth
What is most true about you is not what is most visible. The person the world sees — with all its limitations, failures, and incompleteness — is not the final portrait. Your true life is hidden with Christ in God, and when He appears, the fullness of what you are in Him will be revealed. The invisibility is temporary; the glory is permanent.
Application
Think about the gap between what others see of you and what you know to be true of you in Christ — the fullness of your identity that is not visible in your current limitations, struggles, or ordinariness. Let Colossians 3:3 speak into that gap: your life is hidden with Christ in God. The hidden part is the real part. The visible part is the temporary part. Live from the hidden reality.
