I Have Set Before You Life and Death
Reflection
This is one of the most urgent passages in the entire Bible. Moses was not giving a theological lecture — he was making a final plea to a people he loved, on the edge of his death and their transition into the land. "See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering." But if your heart turns away, if you bow down to other gods — you will surely perish. "This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him." Choose life. Two words. The simplest and most radical invitation in Scripture. Notice what choosing life means: love the Lord, listen to his voice, hold fast to him. Life is not a list of religious behaviors — it is a relationship. Death is not primarily punishment; it is the natural consequence of being cut off from the source of life. And the scope is transgenerational: so that you and your children may live. Personal choices about God cascade into generational inheritance.
Background
Deuteronomy 30 is part of the covenant renewal ceremony on the plains of Moab. The structure echoes ancient treaty renewals, where a suzerain would set terms before his people and call witnesses. Moses invoked heaven and earth as cosmic witnesses — permanent, unchanging, available to testify to every generation that the choice was genuinely offered.
Truth
The gospel is not a take-it-or-leave-it offer presented once and never repeated. God's call to choose life is urgent, personal, and available today. Every day contains a version of this choice — not just in dramatic crisis moments but in the small, daily orientations of the heart.
Application
Today, right now, choose life. What does that mean concretely? Choose to love God by spending time with Him. Choose to hear His voice by reading His Word. Choose to hold fast by refusing the small daily compromises you've been rationalizing. Name the one compromise you will refuse today.
