Let There Be Light
Reflection
In the beginning, there was nothing — no time, no space, no matter. Then God spoke. Four words changed everything: "Let there be light." Instantly, photons burst into existence, and darkness was divided from light. This first act of creation was not merely physical; it was a declaration of God's character. He is the source of all light, all clarity, all life. The Hebrew word for "created" — bara — is used only with God as its subject in the Old Testament. Only God creates from nothing. We rearrange, we build, we form — but we cannot speak reality into being. The opening verse of Scripture confronts us with God's absolute sovereignty and creative power. Notice that God evaluated His work: "God saw that the light was good." Creation is not an accident or an experiment gone right — it is intentional artistry by a personal God who delights in what He makes. Every sunrise is a daily re-enactment of that first creative word.
Background
Genesis opens with a poetic, structured account of creation across six days. Ancient Near Eastern cultures had their own creation myths, often involving conflict between gods. Genesis stands apart by presenting a single, all-powerful God who creates through peaceful spoken word — no struggle, no chaos defeated, just sovereign command.
Truth
God does not need raw materials, tools, or assistance. He speaks, and what was not — is. This means He is not limited by your circumstances either. The same God who spoke galaxies into existence can speak order, purpose, and new life into the chaos of your situation.
Application
Pause today and look at something in creation — sunlight, a tree, your own hands. Remember that you are the work of the same God who spoke light into being. Ask Him to speak light into any dark corner of your life today.
