The Least of the Least
Reflection
The Midianites had been ravaging Israel for seven years. Every harvest was stripped. Israel hid in caves and holes. One man — Gideon — was secretly threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. Not exactly a portrait of heroism. The angel of the Lord appeared and said: "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior." Gideon's response was immediate skepticism: "If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about?" Fair questions. Honest questions. Gideon wasn't pretending to have faith he didn't have. God's response ignored the theological debate and gave a commission: "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?" Gideon's objection: "My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." He had credentials for failure, not success. He was last in a last-place tribe. God's response: "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive." Notice that God did not address the weakness. He didn't say Gideon was wrong about his qualifications. He said: I will be with you. The answer to weakness is presence, not performance enhancement. Gideon would need 300 men, torches, and clay jars to defeat an army of thousands — so that no one would say anything except: God did this.
Background
The Midianites used camels extensively for raiding — an ancient military technology that gave them a decisive mobility advantage. The Israelites had no comparable response. Gideon's 300-man victory over an army of 135,000 (Judges 8:10) remains one of the most lopsided military outcomes in the ancient world, and is explicitly attributed to divine intervention.
Truth
God's assessment of you is not based on your assessment of yourself. He called Gideon a mighty warrior while Gideon was hiding. He names you by what He has made you to be, not by where you currently are. The commission comes before the confidence.

What identity or calling has God spoken over you that you have been dismissing because of your small family, weak background, or lack of credentials? Write down what God says about you alongside what you say about yourself. Let His words be louder.
