Because They Did Not Listen
Reflection
In 722 BC, the northern kingdom of Israel fell to Assyria. Ten tribes were deported, scattered across the empire, and never returned as a distinct people. The narrator of 2 Kings paused to explain why — not with political or military analysis, but with theological clarity. "All this took place because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods and followed the practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before them." The pattern of failure was multi-generational and comprehensive. They built high places. They set up sacred stones and Asherah poles. They worshiped Baal. They sacrificed their children. They sought omens and sorcery. They sold themselves to do evil. But before the judgment, there had been persistent mercy: "The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: 'Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors.' But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors who did not trust in the Lord their God." God sent prophets. They did not listen. God kept warning. They rejected the warnings. God gave them time. They used the time to sin more. Finally, judgment came. "So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence." The kingdom ended because the people refused to hear. This passage is not primarily a warning about national politics — it is a warning about the trajectory of incremental spiritual drift.
Background
The Assyrian exile of the northern kingdom (722 BC) effectively ended the existence of the ten northern tribes as a distinct ethnic and religious community. Their absorption into the Assyrian empire is the historical origin of the "ten lost tribes" — a subject of considerable speculation. The narrator of 2 Kings uses this catastrophic ending to provide the definitive theological interpretation of the entire period of the monarchy.
Truth
Incremental spiritual drift is not neutral — it has a destination. Every step away from God is a step toward a consequence that accumulates quietly until it arrives catastrophically. The invitation to return is always present before the consequence becomes permanent.
