Our Eyes Are on You
Reflection
The context of Jehoshaphat's great prayer (2 Chronicles 20:5–12) is important. The prayer does not begin with the famous last line — it builds to it. Jehoshaphat started with theology: who God is, what He has done, the covenant He has made, the promises He has given. He rehearsed the history of divine faithfulness before making his petition. Then came the problem: a vast army. We have no power against them. We don't know what to do. And then the final declaration: "but our eyes are on you." Six words that changed everything. Not: our plan is X. Not: our strategy involves Y. Not: we are trusting you to approve our approach. Just: our eyes are on you. This is the foundational posture of biblical prayer. Not informing God of the situation (He knows). Not suggesting solutions (He has better ones). Not demanding a specific outcome (He may have a better one). Just: we are watching you, we are turning toward you, our attention is on your face. The answer came through prophecy: the battle is not yours, but God's. Stand still and see the deliverance of the Lord. Eyes on God do not see the army as less real. But they see it through a different framework. The vast army becomes background; God becomes foreground. The threat is still present; the perspective has changed.
Background
The phrase "our eyes are on you" (Hebrew: aleikha einenu) is rare in the Old Testament, making its appearance here all the more striking. The physical act of turning one's eyes toward God was a common metaphor in ancient prayer — linked to the image of watching an overlord for signals or instructions. The eyes of the servant watched the hand of the master (Psalm 123:2); so Jehoshaphat turns Israel's gaze toward God for direction.
Truth
When you don't know what to do, turning your eyes to God is not a last resort — it is the first and most important act. It is not a confession of failure; it is a declaration of dependence. And dependence on God is not weakness — it is the strategic position from which He most powerfully acts.

What situation in your life right now most needs this prayer? Write it out: "Lord, I have no power against [name it]. I don't know what to do. But my eyes are on You." Say it daily until you see the deliverance.
