Seek First His Kingdom
Reflection
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:25–34 is Jesus's extended teaching on anxiety. He named it twice: "do not be anxious about your life" (v. 25), "do not be anxious" (v. 31). The repetition tells us something: anxiety is real, persistent, and needs to be addressed. The argument Jesus made is cumulative: consider the birds (they don't store and God feeds them), consider the lilies (they don't work and they outshine Solomon). If God clothes the grass of the field, will He not much more clothe you? And then the diagnosis: "For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them" (v. 32). The anxiety about provision is the posture of those who don't have a Father who knows. You do. The command: seek first. Not seek eventually, not seek after you've secured the basics, not seek alongside your other seeking — seek first. What to seek: his kingdom and his righteousness. Not your comfort, not your security, not your success — His kingdom, His righteousness. The promise: "all these things will be given to you as well." The things you have been anxious about — food, clothing, provision — are the things that are added when the priority is right. This is not a prosperity formula. It is an ordering principle: when what God wants becomes the primary orientation, the secondary things are governed by the primary One.
Background
Matthew 6:25–34 is part of the Sermon on the Mount. The section on anxiety comes immediately after the section on money (you cannot serve both God and money, v. 24), establishing a connection: anxiety about provision is often rooted in misplaced primary allegiance. The phrase "seek first" (prōton in Greek) was understood in its ancient context as giving something the highest priority — before other concerns, above other agendas.
Truth
The cure for anxiety is not more security — it is a different priority. When your heavenly Father's kingdom is what you are primarily seeking, the things you have been anxious about become the Father's responsibility to provide. You do not stop needing food and clothing; you stop being the one who has to secure them.
Application
What specific provision are you currently anxious about — financial, relational, occupational? Name it. Then ask: in this area, am I seeking His kingdom first, or am I seeking the provision first and His kingdom as a secondary concern? Pray Matthew 6:33 as a commitment: Lord, I choose to seek Your kingdom first in this situation. I trust You with the rest.
