No Condemnation for Those in Christ
Reflection
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8:1 is the resolution to one of the most tortured passages in the New Testament — Romans 7, where Paul described the war within: "I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing" (7:19). The internal conflict of the person under law, wanting to obey and unable, was laid out with brutal honesty. And then: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation." The word "therefore" is crucial. It points backward to everything that has been established: justification by faith (chapters 3–4), death to sin and life in Christ (chapter 6), the Spirit who does what the law could not do (chapters 7–8). "No condemnation" — not less condemnation, not conditional condemnation, not reduced condemnation. None. The verdict has been rendered: not guilty. The case is closed. "For those who are in Christ Jesus." The location matters: in Christ. Not beside Him, not following Him from a distance, not admiring Him — in Him. Union with Christ is the ground of the verdict. The word "now" matters too: not eventually, not at the judgment, not after you have improved sufficiently. Now. Present tense. The verdict is not pending; it is current. Romans 8 goes on to describe what the Spirit does in the person who is free from condemnation: gives life to mortal bodies (v. 11), leads as sons and daughters (v. 14), bears witness with our spirit that we are God's children (v. 16), helps in weakness with intercession (v. 26), works all things together for good (v. 28).
Background
Romans 8 is often called the greatest chapter in the Bible. It opens with the declaration of no condemnation and closes with the declaration that nothing can separate us from the love of God (8:38–39). Between these two bookends, Paul described the life of the Spirit — the Spirit of sonship, the interceding Spirit, the guaranteeing Spirit. The chapter has sustained believers through every kind of suffering and is quoted or alluded to more than almost any other passage in Christian funeral and comfort literature.
Truth
The condemnation that your conscience rehearses, that your failures reinforce, that your enemies leverage — it has no legal standing in the court where your case has been heard. You are in Christ. The verdict is rendered. No condemnation.
Application
Name the specific condemnation you have been rehearsing — the accusation that keeps returning, the verdict that won't stay dismissed. Now say Romans 8:1 over it: There is now no condemnation for me, because I am in Christ Jesus. Not because I have improved. Not because I have earned it. Because I am in Him. Say it until the legal reality precedes the emotional reality.
