What Do You Have in Your House?
Reflection
A widow came to Elisha in desperate crisis. Her husband — a prophet who had served Elisha — was dead. The creditor was coming to take her two sons as debt slaves. She had nothing. Elisha asked: what do you have in your house? She said: just a little oil. The instructions were specific and somewhat strange: go to your neighbors and collect as many empty jars as you can. Not a few — as many as possible. Then go inside, shut the door, and pour your oil into all the jars. She collected the jars. She began to pour. The oil kept flowing — jar after jar after jar. When every jar was full, she told her son to bring her another one. He said there were no more. The oil stopped flowing. She went to Elisha. He said: sell the oil, pay the debt, and you and your sons can live off what's left. The miracle was proportional to her faith in collecting jars. The oil stopped when the jars ran out. The boundaries of the miracle were set by how many empty vessels she brought. God worked through what she already had — just a little oil — multiplied by her obedient preparation of empty vessels. The more she prepared to receive, the more she received. This pattern recurs throughout Scripture: loaves and fish multiplied, wine provided at the last moment, provision that matches the preparation of faith.
Background
The law of debt slavery (Leviticus 25:39–41) allowed creditors to claim the persons of debtors who could not pay. The widow's situation was legally desperate — not just an inconvenience but an existential threat to her family. Elisha's miracle operates within the economic reality of the ancient world while revealing God's specific concern for the vulnerable widow and orphan.
Truth
What you bring to God, however small, is the raw material for multiplication. He does not wait until you have more to work with. He asks what you have now, then tells you how to prepare to receive more. The limit on His provision is often the size of your prepared vessels.
Application
Ask yourself Elisha's question: "What do you have in your house?" What gifts, resources, or capacities do you have — however small — that you have been discounting? Offer them to God today as your jar of oil, and begin to prepare empty vessels for multiplication.
