Lesson 6 · Unit 1 · God & Me

The Spirit Lives in Me

You are not living the new life on your own strength.

about 12 minMemory: Romans 8:15

Open

The gym membership bought in January is gathering dust by March. The resolution to quit sugar lasts until the first birthday party. The plan to read the whole Bible this year stalls in Leviticus. When it comes to our own willpower, we know the truth about ourselves. Which is why a lot of people, not long after coming to faith, begin to worry quietly: the standard in the Bible is far higher than a fitness plan — what am I supposed to hold it up with? On the night before he was arrested, Jesus answered exactly that question. He did not say, "try harder." He said: I will ask the Father, and he will give you another one.

Scripture

The first passage is Jesus' promise; the second is Paul describing what it looks like once the promise has come true. Watch two phrases: "in you," and "we cry." (John 14:16-17; Romans 8:14-16, WEB)

John 14:16-17World English BibleOpen in the Bible

16I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever:

17the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive, for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Romans 8:14-16World English BibleOpen in the Bible

14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.

15For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God;

A person, not a force

Jesus calls the Spirit the Counselor — in Greek, parakletos, literally "the one called alongside to help": an advocate, a supporter, help that is always present. Note that he is a person, not a power or an atmosphere. The Spirit has personhood: he teaches (John 14:26), he can be grieved (Eph 4:30), he prays for us himself (Rom 8:26). "Another" one means of the same kind and the same rank as Jesus — the way Jesus walked with the disciples, except no longer limited by location. Verse 17 also builds a step higher: he "lives with you," and then he "will be in you." God is no longer only the one who travels beside you. He has become the one who lives inside you.

From imitation to indwelling

There are two ways to try to live the new life. One works from the outside by imitation: take the character of Christ as a model and copy it out by force of jaw. We have all seen where that road ends — the gym card gathering dust in March. The other grows from the inside: Galatians calls love, joy and peace the "fruit" of the Spirit, and fruit is grown, not tied onto a dead tree with string. Romans 8:14 says God's children are people "led by the Spirit," and even hard labor like putting a bad habit to death the Bible says is done "by the Spirit" (Rom 8:13). This is not passivity: you still obey, you still practice. But it is cooperation with someone living inside you, not a solo performance. The difference shows up in the first reaction — when trouble comes, do you set your teeth first, or call for help first?

Abba, Father — the cry inside you is his witness

"Abba" is the Aramaic word a child uses for a father: intimate, unguarded, at ease. Paul says we cry that way because what we received was not the spirit of a slave but the Spirit of adoption. A slave works by reading the master's face and fears being thrown out when he gets something wrong; a child grows up in the house and runs into the father's arms after a fall. That you dare to say "Father" when you pray — that daring is the Spirit's signature inside you: "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God." And here the first unit closes its circle. You are known and loved (lesson 1), the break is repaired at the cross (lesson 3), the empty tomb guarantees the future (lesson 4), grace gives assurance (lesson 5), and now God himself has moved in. News like that is worth telling somebody.

Deeper

Counselor (parakletos)

literally "the one called to your side"; "another" one means of the same kind and rank as Jesus (John 14:16).

The personhood of the Spirit

the Spirit is "he," not "it" — he teaches, he grieves, he intercedes (John 14:26; Rom 8:26); the third person of the Trinity.

Indwelling

the Spirit is not only with you, he is in you; your body has become his temple (John 14:17; 1 Cor 6:19).

Adoption

salvation does not stop at forgiveness; it takes us in as sons and daughters, and the cry "Abba, Father" was put there by the Spirit (Rom 8:15-16).

Story

Huilin is thirty-four and the mother of two. After she came to faith, the thing she most wanted to change was her temper. She tried everything: taping "love is patient" to the refrigerator, counting to ten before erupting, making herself copy out Scripture as punishment afterward. Six months in she broke down in her small group: "The harder I try, the worse I fail. Maybe I am just not cut out to be a Christian." An older sister did not hand her a new method. She asked one question: "Before you blow up, do you ever call for help?"

So Huilin started practicing one very small thing: in the three seconds while the anger is rising, saying inside, "Holy Spirit, help me." There was no overnight miracle. The anger still comes. But slowly, the explosion turned into a deep breath. One evening about a year later, her six-year-old son prayed at bedtime: "Thank you, God, that when Mom gets angry now, she closes her eyes first and then talks." What the child could see was exactly what the one he could not see was doing inside her.

Respond

Reflect — alone, or talk it through together

1In John 14:16-17, what words does Jesus use for the Spirit's relationship to the disciples? What is the difference between "lives with you" and "will be in you"?

2Think of a time you tried hardest on your own and failed worst. If you had called for help in that moment, what might have been different?

3When you pray, is your real posture more like a slave reading the master's face, or a child running into his arms? What is holding you back?

Saved on this device only — visible to no one but you.

Pray together

Abba, Father! Thank you for not handing the new life over to my willpower, but giving me your Spirit inside me instead. Counselor, you are welcome here — you were present in every struggle of mine, and my prayers have you holding them up. Teach me to call for help before I speak and before I act, so that I am no longer performing alone but living with you and led by you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Walk

This week's actionabout 20 min

Complete Milestone One, the three-minute gospel. Thread the six lessons of this unit into one line: known and loved, the break, the cross, the empty tomb, grace given free, the Spirit indwelling. Write a three-minute script first, then tell it to someone walking this road with you, and say what it means for you yourself. Before you start, call for help.

Mark it when it happens — this week, at your pace.

Spiritual practice

Each morning this week, say a word of welcome to the Spirit: "Counselor, walk with me today." When something comes up, call for help inside before you open your mouth or lift a finger.
