Lesson 104 · Unit 16 · The Sent Ones

Your Sending Place

Sending does not begin at an airport. It begins where you are going tomorrow.

about 12 minMemory: John 20:21

Open

At the end of the month your phone pops up a notice: "Your month in places." You open it and there is a heat map — home, the office, the subway line, that breakfast stall you always use, your child's school. A few bright spots, a few thin lines, and that is your month. You look at it a while, unsure whether it feels steady or deflating: thirty days, and only these few places.

When we think of mission, what comes to mind is usually somewhere outside that map — airports, passports, a language you cannot follow. But on the evening of the resurrection, the sending Jesus spoke to a roomful of disciples landed inside the map: as the Father has sent me, even so I send you.

Scripture

On the evening of the resurrection, in a locked room, the Lord leaves a sending; Ephesians says the good works were prepared long ago. (John 20:19-21; Ephesians 2:10, WEB)

John 20:19-21World English BibleOpen in the Bible

19When therefore it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were locked where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the middle and said to them, “Peace be to you.”

20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad when they saw the Lord.

21Jesus therefore said to them again, “Peace be to you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.”

Ephesians 2:10World English BibleOpen in the Bible

10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

See

How heavy "even so" is

Notice the scene: the doors are locked, "for fear of the Jews" — the sending falls on a group of people shaking with fright. Jesus does not train up their nerve first. He gives peace first: "Peace be to you," twice, with the nail marks in his hands and his side shown in between. Only then comes the charge: "As the Father has sent me, even so I send you" (John 20:21). Those two words, "even so," fix the pattern. The Father sent the Son by incarnation — living among people (John 1:14), speaking words people could understand, paying a real price. To be sent after that pattern is not to run a project; it is to move in, sit down, be willing to be interrupted, be willing to get hurt. The Lord who sends us holds out pierced hands first. He has walked this road, and the peace is his to give.

The good works are already prepared

Ephesians 2:10 says the other half outright: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them." Two acts of making are stacked together — you yourself are God's finished work, and the good you are to do was laid out by God beforehand. That pulls "your sending place" down out of the imagination onto the ground: the good works God has prepared are mostly not in a distant place you cannot reach; they run along your heat map — your desk, the stairwell, the parents' group chat, the breakfast stall you always use. Lesson 82 said there is only one life and you do not need a different field; this lesson goes further: going to work is not a grim necessity for making a living, it is a posting. A people in exile were given a similar instruction: "Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive... for in its peace you will have peace" (Jer 29:7). On the same commute, "making a living" and "being sent" are two different ways of walking.

Turning a crowd into a list

The mark of a sending place is that the people in it start to have names. Jesus "saw the multitudes" and "was moved with compassion" — what he saw was not foot traffic but "sheep without a shepherd" (Matt 9:36). So here is an exercise: draw your field. Write down the four places you show up every week. Under each one, write three faces — a name, or whatever you call them (the man in the mail room, the cleaner on the seventh floor, the young colleague who is always working late). With twelve names on the paper in front of you, you will probably be startled: the good works God prepared have had faces on them all along. Then start with one name. Pray for him, ask him one real question about how he is, and say the thank-you you have owed for a long time. Sending does not begin at an airport. It begins with this sheet of paper.

Deeper

Sent even so (John 20:21)

the pattern of the sending is the incarnation: move in, speak human speech, pay the price.

Nail marks and peace (John 20:20)

the Lord gives peace and shows the wounds before he gives the charge; the nerve of a sent person is not courage but the risen Lord.

His workmanship (Eph 2:10)

the word underneath is *poiema*, a made thing: you are God's finished work, set inside the good works he prepared beforehand.

The awareness of being sent

in the same job, "making a living" and "being sent" are two different ways of walking: the setting has not changed, the identity has (see Lesson 82).

Seek the peace of the city (Jer 29:7)

the place you are set down in is the place you are sent to; the city's peace and yours are tied together.

Story

A-Lan runs a hair salon of about ten square meters in Hefei, with a sign faded pale. Since coming to faith she had felt she fell short: no gift for talking, and no time to "go out and evangelize." Then one Sunday she heard John 20:21 and thought suddenly: this chair I stand beside all day long — does that count as a sending place? She began to pay attention. People sit down, the cape goes on, and they start to talk — anxiety about school admissions, a stalemate with a mother-in-law, an arrow on a test result. She learned to listen first, and while sweeping up she prayed in her heart for whoever had just left. A small notebook appeared under the till, with the names of regulars and their situations: "Auntie Qiu, grandson's exams." "Xiaoman, just lost her job." One woman came once a month even though her hair had barely grown; she just wanted somebody to talk to. Two years later that woman spoke up on her own: "That Sunday meeting of yours... could I come and see?"

Respond

Reflect — alone, or talk it through together

1The scene of John 20:19-21: why were the doors locked? What did Jesus give the disciples before he sent them?

2The words "even so" fix the pattern of sending as incarnation — which of your assumptions about evangelism does that change?

3What are the four places you show up every week? Among the three faces at each, which one has God put on your heart this season?

Saved on this device only — visible to no one but you.

Pray together

Lord Jesus, who said "Peace be to you" with nail marks in your hands and then sent me as you were sent: thank you for giving peace before you gave the charge. I keep thinking sending happens far away, and you have prepared the good works in the place I am going tomorrow. Let me see sheep without a shepherd on the route I know best. Give me the patience of the incarnation: to move in, to sit down, to pay the price. My place is small; your sending is not. Let me go out tomorrow as one sent. Amen.

Walk

This week's actionabout 15 min

Draw your field. On one sheet of paper write the four places you show up every week, and under each write three faces (a name or what you call them). Circle one of them, pray for that person three times this week, and ask them once, for real, how they are.

Mark it when it happens — this week, at your pace.

Spiritual practice

Before you leave the house each day, pray one sending prayer from John 20:21: "Lord, the places you send me today are still these few — let me see the person you want me to see."
