The Universe Made of the Invisible
The Fact
Hebrews 11:3 states: 'By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.' The phrase 'what is seen was not made out of what was visible' is remarkable. In modern physics, all visible matter is made of atoms — which themselves are made of subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons) that are invisible to the naked eye. At the quantum level, these particles themselves are not solid objects but probability waves of energy. An atom is 99.99999% empty space — what appears solid is mostly void. Democritus of ancient Greece (460–370 BC) proposed that matter consisted of indivisible 'atoms,' but this was rejected by Aristotle and forgotten. It was not until John Dalton's atomic theory (1803) and later quantum physics (early 20th century) that the invisible basis of visible matter was confirmed. The universe you can see is made entirely of what you cannot see — quarks, electrons, photons, force fields. The author of Hebrews was making a theological point about creation, but the incidental observation that visible reality is built from invisible foundations has proven to be scientifically accurate.
Context
Colossians 1:17 adds another dimension: 'He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.' Modern physics identifies strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, electromagnetism, and gravity as the four forces holding matter together — but cannot explain why these constants are fine-tuned to allow matter to exist at all.
Significance
Modern physics has confirmed that matter is built from invisible particles and forces — a stunning alignment with the Hebrews 11:3 observation that the visible came from the invisible.
Reflection
