The Heart in Scripture: Not Just a Metaphor

The Fact

In the Bible, the 'heart' (Hebrew: lev/levav; Greek: kardia) is the seat of thought, emotion, will, and spiritual orientation — not just feeling. Proverbs 4:23: 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.' Proverbs 23:7: 'As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.' Matthew 15:19: 'For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery...' Romans 10:9–10: '...believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead... For with the heart one believes and is justified.' In modern Western thought, these functions belong to the brain, not the heart. However, recent neurocardiology has made a surprising discovery: the heart contains approximately 40,000 neurons — about as many as certain brain regions — forming what researchers call the 'heart-brain.' The heart sends more information to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. The heart also produces oxytocin (the 'love hormone') independently of the brain. The HeartMath Institute has published research showing that the heart's electromagnetic field influences brain activity and cognition. This doesn't prove the biblical use of 'heart' is neurologically literal — but the heart's complex neural network suggests it plays a role in cognition and decision-making beyond simple metaphor.

Context

The ancient Egyptians located thought and emotion in the heart — and actually removed the brain (through the nostrils) during mummification while carefully preserving the heart. They weren't entirely wrong about its significance.

Significance

The Bible's focus on the heart as the center of moral and spiritual life now has a surprising neurocardiology parallel — the heart really is a cognitive organ, not just a metaphorical one.

Reflection

Proverbs says 'guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.' What are you letting into your heart — what you watch, read, rehearse, and dwell on — and what is flowing out of it into your life?
