Ezekiel's New Heart Prophecy
The Fact
Ezekiel 36:26–27 is one of the most remarkable passages in the Old Testament: 'I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.' This prophecy was given during the Babylonian exile — when Israel had definitively demonstrated their incapacity to keep the covenant. God's response was not to demand better effort but to promise a different kind of heart and the indwelling Spirit. The New Testament sees this fulfilled in the regeneration and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit given to believers at conversion. Paul describes believers as 'a letter from Christ... written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts' (2 Corinthians 3:3). Jesus's conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:1–8) about being 'born again' and 'born of the Spirit' directly echoes Ezekiel 36.
Context
Ezekiel 37 (the Valley of Dry Bones) follows directly — and uses the same Spirit-giving language. The two passages together describe a complete restoration: new heart (inward), new Spirit (inward), new community (outward), new land (physical).
Significance
God doesn't fix the old heart — he replaces it. Transformation in Scripture is not self-improvement; it is death and resurrection, stone becoming flesh, exile becoming homecoming.
