In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat king of Judah faced a combined army of Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites — described as 'a great multitude.' The Judean scouts reported: 'A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea.' Rather than trusting military strategy, Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. God's response through the prophet Jahaziel was stunning: 'Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God's. You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf.' Jehoshaphat appointed singers to go before the army, singing praises. When they arrived at the battlefield, they found their enemies had destroyed each other. Not a single enemy escaped. The army only needed to collect the plunder, which took three days. The story is one of the Bible's most dramatic accounts of God winning a battle his people could never win themselves.
Context
Jehoshaphat's response to crisis was to seek God first — proclaiming fasting and gathering all Judah before the Temple. His prayer recorded in 2 Chronicles 20:6–12 is a masterclass in honest, faith-filled supplication.
Significance
