Psalms wins the title of longest book by chapter count with 150 chapters. But by word count in the original languages, Jeremiah takes the prize — approximately 33,000 Hebrew words. In third place by word count is Genesis (about 32,000 words), followed by Ezekiel and Numbers. Psalms, despite its 150 chapters, is shorter in total words than Jeremiah because many of the Psalms are brief poems. The longest single chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119 with 176 verses — an elaborate acrostic poem in which each section of 8 verses begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and every verse celebrates the word of God. Among New Testament books, Luke is the longest by word count (about 19,400 Greek words), followed closely by Acts (also by Luke). Paul's letter to the Romans is the longest Pauline letter. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest Gospel.
Context
