Genesis 6:15 specifies the ark's dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. A cubit is typically understood as about 18 inches (45 cm), making the ark approximately 450 feet (137 meters) long, 75 feet (23 meters) wide, and 45 feet (14 meters) high. The ark's displacement would be approximately 43,000 tons — comparable to a modern cargo ship. In 1993, Dr. Seon Won Hong and colleagues at the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering published a study analyzing the ark's dimensions. They modeled the ark against 12 other vessel dimensions with the same volume and found that the biblical ratio was optimal for both stability (resistance to capsizing) and comfort (reduced rolling motion). The 6:1 length-to-width ratio is within the range of 5:1 to 7:1 used in many modern large cargo ships. An independent Korean study (1993) specifically concluded: 'The Ark of Noah was a well-designed seagoing vessel.' Whether the ark carried all species or a representative sample remains debated; the dimensional precision of the vessel itself is remarkable.
Context
Until the 20th century, Noah's Ark held the record as the largest wooden ship ever described. The SS Great Eastern (built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1858) was approximately 690 feet long — the first iron ship to exceed the ark's described length.
