Biography
Hannah was the beloved but barren wife of Elkanah, whose rival wife Peninnah provoked her mercilessly year after year. In deep anguish, she went to the tabernacle and prayed so intensely that Eli the priest thought she was drunk. She made a vow to dedicate her child to God if he would grant her a son. God heard her prayer, and she conceived and bore Samuel. She fulfilled her vow by bringing Samuel to the tabernacle as a young child. Her song of praise after Samuel's birth foreshadows Mary's Magnificat.
Spiritual Lesson
Hannah models the prayer of faith born from anguish rather than comfort. Her prayer was not polished or measured — it was desperate, weeping, and specific. God heard it. She also demonstrates the highest form of thanksgiving: keeping the costly vow she made in her moment of need. Her willingness to give back the son she had prayed for with such longing is one of Scripture's most moving acts of consecration.
