James, Son of Zebedee

Biography
James the son of Zebedee was a fisherman and the brother of John. Together they were called 'Boanerges' — Sons of Thunder — by Jesus, reflecting their fiery temperament. He was one of the inner circle of three (with Peter and John) who witnessed the Transfiguration and were present in Gethsemane. He and John asked Jesus if they could call fire from heaven on a Samaritan village and requested the seats of honor in the kingdom. James was the first apostle martyred — beheaded by Herod Agrippa around AD 44 (Acts 12).
Spiritual Lesson
James's ambition was not wrong — he wanted to be near Jesus. What needed transformation was the direction: from seeking honor for himself to spending himself for others. Jesus's words — 'you will drink the cup I drink' — were not a rebuke but a prophecy he fulfilled with his life. The Sons of Thunder became Sons of sacrifice. Passionate temperaments, surrendered to Christ, become powerful instruments of the kingdom.
