Biography
Joshua was Moses' faithful assistant who became the commander of Israel after Moses' death. He led Israel in the conquest of Canaan, beginning with the miraculous fall of Jericho's walls. He divided the Promised Land among the twelve tribes and called the nation to covenant renewal at Shechem with the famous declaration: 'As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.' He was one of only two spies who believed God's promise and urged Israel to enter the land.
Spiritual Lesson
Joshua's name means 'the Lord saves' — the Hebrew equivalent of 'Jesus.' He models the courage of those who take God at his word when circumstances seem daunting. His secret? He meditated on the Book of the Law day and night (Joshua 1:8). Spiritual victory flows from God's Word saturating our minds and shaping our decisions.
