Biography
Lydia was a businesswoman from Thyatira who sold purple cloth — a luxury trade associated with the wealthy. She was worshipping at a riverside prayer meeting in Philippi when Paul arrived and preached. The Lord opened her heart to believe, and she and her household were baptized — making her the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. She immediately invited Paul and his team to stay in her home, which became the base for the Philippian church. Her business, her home, and her household were all enlisted in the kingdom.
Spiritual Lesson
Lydia shows that conversion is both a divine act and a human response: 'The Lord opened her heart' — and she responded. Her story also shows the immediate overflow of new faith into hospitality and generosity. She did not wait to be established in the faith before serving; she opened her home the same day. Her example challenges us: when Christ enters a life, he enters the whole life — including our resources, our space, and our vocation.
