Biography
Martha was the sister of Mary of Bethany and Lazarus, and one of Jesus's closest friends. She appears twice in the Gospels in contrasting scenes: once when she complained to Jesus that Mary was listening while she alone worked (Luke 10), and once at the tomb of Lazarus where she made one of the most remarkable confessions of faith in the Gospels. She represents the tension between active service and contemplative presence — and shows that both can lead to deep faith when Jesus is at the center.
Spiritual Lesson
Martha is often unfairly reduced to a 'bad example' compared to Mary. But her confession at Lazarus's tomb — 'I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God' — rivals Peter's in its depth. Her activism and her faith are not separate. She shows that service is not wrong; distraction is. And that the one who is 'troubled by many things' can also be the one who, when loss strikes, stands before Jesus and declares: 'Even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.'
