Jacob's Well
Description
Jacob's Well is located in Sychar, near ancient Shechem in Samaria, and is one of the most reliably identified biblical sites. Dug by the patriarch Jacob and given to his son Joseph, it descends about 32 meters into the earth. The well has been in continuous use for over three thousand years.
Significance
Jesus's encounter at Jacob's Well breaks multiple social barriers — cultural, religious, and gender — revealing that the living water of salvation is for all people. His declaration that true worshipers worship in spirit and truth transcends any physical sacred site including the well itself.
Key Events
Jacob purchased this plot of land near Shechem and likely dug the well (Genesis 33:18-20). Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman here, revealing Himself as the Messiah (John 4:1-42). Her testimony led many Samaritans to believe in Jesus.
Modern Context
Jacob's Well today is housed inside the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Photini (named after the Samaritan woman) in Nablus (ancient Shechem) in the Palestinian West Bank. The well is still accessible and functional, and pilgrims continue to draw water from it as a spiritual act.
