Biography
William Cameron Townsend was born in Eastvale, California, and attended Occidental College before leaving for Guatemala in 1917 to sell Spanish Bibles. An encounter with a Cakchiquel Maya man who asked why the Bible was not in his language changed the course of Townsend's life. He spent the next twelve years learning Cakchiquel, reducing the language to writing, and translating the New Testament — a project he completed in 1931. He realized that hundreds of indigenous languages lacked any Scripture, and in 1934 he founded Camp Wycliffe — a summer linguistic training course — which grew into Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International (Summer Institute of Linguistics), organizations that have become the largest Bible translation enterprise in history. Townsend pioneered partnership with secular governments, notably the friendship he cultivated with Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas and later with governments across Latin America and beyond. He insisted on treating indigenous peoples with dignity and respect at a time when many regarded them as inferior. He founded Jungle Aviation and Radio Service (JAARS) to support translators in remote areas. By the time of his death, Wycliffe had over six thousand workers in over fifty countries.
Key Works
Townsend's translation of the Cakchiquel New Testament (1931) was his first major translation achievement. He founded Camp Wycliffe (1934), which became Wycliffe Bible Translators, now engaged in translation work in over 1,700 languages. He co-founded SIL International, which has produced linguistic and anthropological research on thousands of languages and contributed to the academic field of descriptive linguistics. He wrote Tolo the Volcano's Son and other popular missionary narratives, as well as Lázaro Cárdenas: Democrat and Patriot, reflecting his unusual commitment to government partnership.
Legacy
Cameron Townsend's founding vision — that every language group deserves the Bible in their mother tongue — has shaped global missions for nearly a century. Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International have produced translations in over 900 languages and are working on hundreds more. SIL's linguistic data underpins much of what is known about the world's minority languages. Townsend's model of respectful partnership with governments changed how missions related to host nations.
