Old Testament

Psalms 131

World English Bible

Overview

One of the shortest psalms, this is a tender confession of humble trust. David refuses proud ambition and "things too great" for him, and instead pictures his soul as a weaned child resting quietly against its mother. The psalm ends by calling all Israel to hope in the LORD with that same settled calm.

1A Song of Ascents. By David. Yahweh, my heart isn’t arrogant, nor my eyes lofty; nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me.

2Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3Israel, hope in Yahweh, from this time forward and forever more.
