Lesson 67 · Unit 11 · Inside the Front Door

Let Your Family See

Witness at home goes behavior first, words second — and the words go gently.

about 12 minMemory: 1 Peter 3:15

Open

The first person to notice you have come to faith is usually not the one who hears you say it. It is the one who watches you every day.

A sister had been a believer for three months and had told no one at home. One evening after supper her mother spoke up from the kitchen: "Has something happened to you lately?" Her stomach tightened. Her mother went on: "You slam fewer doors. And you keep beating me to the dishes."

It turns out that long before you open your mouth, your family has been reading you like a book — page by page, more carefully than anyone else. The only question is this: does what they are reading match what you believe?

Scripture

Peter wrote to believers scattered across the provinces, and in many of their households there was only one believer: themselves. (1 Peter 3:15-16, WEB)

15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,

16having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.

1 Peter 3:1-2World English BibleOpen in the Bible

1In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word,

2seeing your pure behavior in fear.

See

The witness that uses no words

Notice how Peter puts it: "even if any don't obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word" (1 Pet 3:1). They don't obey the Word — the ears are shut. They are won over — the eyes are still open. With family who live beside you day after day, the most powerful witness is often not the one you speak but the one you live: the flare of temper burning lower, fewer complaints, somebody noticing what an elderly parent needs before being asked. Elsewhere Peter says good works can lead those who speak against you to "glorify God" (1 Pet 2:12). You have probably heard the family jab: "What good does believing this do you?" That sentence is actually a window — they are waiting to see what the "good" looks like. Don't rush to defend yourself. Let the answer grow in your living first.

Speak when asked, and speak gently

Now look at the order in 3:15: first "sanctify the Lord God in your hearts," then "everyone who asks you," and only then, "give an answer." The initiative is in God's hands; speaking usually begins with being asked. But when you are asked, you cannot be speechless, so "always be ready" — get the reason for your hope ready as a sentence or two of ordinary household speech. The manner is prescribed too: "with humility and fear." Two lines here are worth remembering: don't preach at home — a home is a dinner table, not a pulpit; and don't use Scripture as a weapon — win the argument with "the Bible says what you're doing is sin," and you have lost the witness. You do not have to apply pressure on God's behalf. He loves your family more than you do.

Three low-threshold ways to speak

The first natural time you speak can be small enough to cost almost nothing. One: grace at a meal. Before anyone picks up chopsticks, say quietly, "Let me give thanks first," bow your head for ten seconds, and issue no invitation and no explanation. Two: when you are asked where you go on Sundays, answer plainly: "I went to church. Things have felt a lot steadier inside me lately." One sentence, then stop, and wait for the next question. Three: when someone at home is going through something hard, say, "I've been praying for you these past few days." Promise no outcome; hand over only the care. Witness is not one speech. It is a thousand small openings of the mouth like these.

Deeper

Sanctify Christ as Lord (1 Pet 3:15)

witness begins with a matter of lordship inside you; once Christ is settled on the throne of the heart, the words have something to stand on.

Won over by conduct (1 Pet 3:1-2)

for the people who see you morning and night, the change they watch comes before the doctrine they hear.

The reason for your hope

not a set of arguments but one sentence of ordinary speech you can actually say out loud; get ready now for the day you are asked.

Humility and fear

how you answer comes before what you answer; win the tone, and only then does the content get a hearing.

Story

Shufen sells tofu at the morning market in Harbin, and she was the first believer in her family. At first her husband sneered: "What good does believing this do you? Does tofu sell for two yuan more?" She did not argue, and she did not dare say the word "church."

The change came in pieces. She had quarreled with the stall next door over the boundary line for ten years; that autumn she gave up half a meter first. She stopped shaving the odd fen off the scale in her own favor. She stopped going to mahjong when she packed up, and cooked dinner instead. During the stretch when her mother-in-law was in the hospital, she sat beside the bed at night and worked the stall by day, and never once said she was tired.

Early in the third spring, her husband was helping her unload and suddenly asked: "That church of yours — what do they actually talk about on Sundays?" She was caught off guard, and only said, "About a God who knows what I really am and wants me anyway. Whenever you want to hear it, come with me once." That Easter, her husband sat down beside her.

Respond

Reflect — alone, or talk it through together

1In 1 Peter 3:1-2 and 3:15, "seeing" and "asking" both come before "saying." Is that the same order you have been working in at home?

2If someone at home asked tonight, "Why do you believe?" — what is your one sentence of ordinary speech right now?

3Think back to the last time a family member mocked or worried aloud about your faith. Behind that sentence, what might they actually be afraid of, or hoping for?

Saved on this device only — visible to no one but you.

Pray together

Lord Christ, sanctified in my heart: I bring you the hardest harvest field I have — my own family. Change this man, this woman, first, and then use my mouth; let the people at home read gentleness in me before they hear a reason. Keep me from hurrying, from arguing, from using your words to press anybody down. You open hearts, and you set the time; my part is to have that one sentence ready, and a love that stays in the room. Amen.

Walk

This week's actionabout 15 min

With no announcement and no explanation, quietly do one practical thing your family actually needs (fix the light that has been out for months, go along on a walk, cook the dish he loves). Every night before sleep, pray one sentence for each family member by name.

Mark it when it happens — this week, at your pace.

Spiritual practice

Write down "the reason for the hope that is in me" in fifty words or less, keep it in the notes app on your phone, and read it once a day this week — always be ready for the day you are asked.
